When considering things that are uncertain, we make many of our judgements and decisions without recourse to complex, problem-solving exercises; i.e. we employ moderate amounts of mental, search effort. Often, we rely solely on life experiences, knowledge, beliefs etc., and make relatively quick decisions.

Known as heuristics, these thought processes produce ‘plausible’ answers or solutions (Polya 1945) which, in the main, satisfy our immediate needs (Simon 1972) . They can, however, ‘lead to severe and systematic errors’ and so we will turn first…..
