Groupthink (Janis 1971) refers to a mode of thinking that occurs when a cohesive (i.e. very close or tight knit) group’s desire for agreement and unanimity is so dominant, it tends to override any realistic appraisal of alternative courses of action. Janis (1971) first applied the term to military and political ingroups who had made decisions in crisis situations and under intense stress. Since then, knowledge of groupthink has been more widely applied to assist organisations with the formation and management of decision-making teams and the monitoring and review of their critical decisions.
